Steelers Morality Issues

Posted by Andrew Rogers on January 27, 2013 at 5:20 PM
The Pittsburgh Steelers are always a team that upholds their morals, that's been a policy since Art Rooney founded the organization in 1933 and they continue to show this today. But sometimes you have to let what happens off the field be off the field, this is hurting our team every year and its getting ridiculous. I'm mainly referring to the issue involving Chris Rainey our former running back and returner. He was a major asset to the team, he would set us up with very short fields at times and emerged as one of the best returners in the league. He was involved in an issue with his girlfriend and the organization heard about this and released him. I think that's unreasonable, its the offseason they don't need to be in all their players business. I realize that this is a serious issue between him and his girlfriend but it should stay there. The Steelers just lost a major weapon in their special teams that made us a factor in a part of the game we aren't particularly known for. This isn't the first time in recent history that we have hurt our team. Santonio Holmes was our best receiver at the time of his release and had just made history by making one of the best catches in superbowl history in the closing minutes of the fourth quarter to give the Steelers the lead and their 6th superbowl win. He became only the sixth receiver ever to win the superbowl mvp (3 out of 6 are from the Steelers: Lynn Swan and Hines Ward) for his 9 reception, 131 yard game. He was, like Rainey, involved in an incident during the offseason and the organization stuck their nose into it, released him, and left a gap in our receiving core. Santonio hasn't been nearly as good since ill admit that, but he has been on the Jets who are basically a media stunt, not a football team. It scares me to think that one small mistake gets you cut from such a prestigious team. This is a big issue too because besides Mike Tomlin, all of our coaches have been here since at least 2005 which means one thing, retirements in the near future. Dick Lebeau has made the Steelers defense one of the most feared in the league and top three in total defense over the past couple years. If one of our younger leaders on defense like Ike Taylor or Lawrence Timmons is cut for an issue like this and Lebeau retires before being able to coach their replacement we will lose our defensive presence. The Steelers always seem to make good hires because we have a great front office. When Tomlin came in I was afraid for our future, but he picked up right where Cowher left off winning a superbowl in his second year as the head coach, obviously we have a system that works. But the system is aging, and if we are "forced" to let go of a major player again, the system could fall apart when the coaches retire. So even though our morals are respected, our team is respected more, let's keep the team a threat with the weapons we have and only focus on big issues with our players. I hadn't heard anything about this Chris Rainey incident until I heard he was released. If the story gets over reported then maybe do something about it like a fine or some other action, suspension for a game or two at most, unless the NFL steps in, but it's way to extreme to cut a great tool like Rainey for issues he has at home. We need to make minor changes in our policy so the organization as a whole can stay at the same level we're at. We're always a contender, let's not literally throw away what makes us such a threat. I'm sure plenty of people have heavy respect for our morals, but if the Chiefs had great morals they'd still be the Chiefs, and that's not good...so let's continue to be the Pittsburgh Steelers that everyone knows and fears.
