Now that the NFL season is over people are going to be shuffling and scrambling to get their hands on a new QB if they feel that a quarterback is the only missing component from their team making a serious run in the 2013 season. There is going to be a lot of interest in Alex Smith this offseason. The interest is warranted from the standpoint that he is one year removed from a NFC Championship game apperance and he had a solid 2011 campaign where his stats were strong: 61.3 %, 3,144 yards, 17 TD, 5 INT, 90.7 QBR.
He was even having a good season this year throwing for 70.2 %, 1737 yards, 13 TD, 5 INT ,104.1 QBR in just ten games this season. Of course everyone knows the rest of the Alex Smith story for 2012 with him losing his job to Colin Kaepernick and having to sit on the sidelines as Kaepernick took the Niners to within a fade route of winning the Super Bowl.
With all that being said if you are a potential suitor for the services of Alex Smith, or a fan clamoring for him to come to your favorite team to hopefully bolster your offense at quaterback, I would be careful about what I wish for. Let's be honest about Alex Smith, his feelings are hurt ! Whatever team gets Alex Smith is going to be getting a player who is sad, like a depressed divorcee who just lost his wife, (or in this case his Super Bowl contending team), to the hotter, younger, more photogenic and virile man.
Yeah your going to look at his stats and the way he commanded the offense in San Francisco and say he could help us. But the thing is that he had a coach in Jim Harbaugh who he devoted himself to and felt that the devotion was being reciprocated from the coach, only to get dumped when he had a headache and was not able to perform his duties.
So remember if he comes to your team and under performs that this is a heartbroken young man who just watched his scarlet and gold woman leave him for a taller, darker, tattooed man. Be mindful of this when you go and say that Alex Smith will look good in your favorite teams uniform. He might be with your team physically, but like Tony Bennett, his heart will be in San Francisco !!
